Best Wood Pellets for Heating in Canada

The best wood pellets for heating are the ones that burn cleanly in your stove: certified, low in ash and moisture, with few fines in the bag. Brand rankings online rarely say who paid for them. Use the checklist below, test two products for a few days, then buy a pallet of the winner.

The checklist

  1. Certification. CANplus (run by the Wood Pellet Association of Canada), ENplus (Europe) and the PFI Standards Program (United States) audit producers and set limits on ash, moisture, durability and fines. Look for the mark and a certificate number you can check on the scheme’s website.
  2. Ash content. Printed as a percentage. Lower means fewer clean-outs.
  3. Moisture. Lower means more heat per bag.
  4. Heat value. In BTU/lb or MJ/kg. Compare products in the same unit.
  5. Fines. Shake an unopened bag: a few crumbs are normal, a layer of sawdust is not.
  6. Pellet size and length. Consistent pellets feed evenly through the auger. Your stove manual may specify a diameter.
  7. Bag condition. Torn or damp bags mean pellets that may have taken on moisture.

A simple test burn

  • Burn one product for three to five days at your usual setting.
  • Note how often you empty the burn pot and the ash pan, and whether clinkers (hard lumps) form.
  • Watch the flame: a lazy, dark flame or soot on the glass can mean high moisture or a stove that needs adjusting.
  • Repeat with the second product and compare.

What we show for each product

Species, bag weight in kg and lb, ash %, moisture %, heat value, bags per pallet and certification with its number, only when the maker’s documentation confirms it, with a link to that spec sheet on each product page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best brand of wood pellets for heating?

The one that passes the checklist and burns cleanly in your stove. Different stoves favour different pellets, which is why a short test burn beats any ranking.

Are more expensive pellets better?

Not necessarily. Compare ash, moisture and heat value; then compare the delivered price per bag. Our price guide shows what bags cost in October 2026.
